Tungsten Alloy Radiation Shield Grades

Tungsten alloy radiation shield grades are classified by tungsten (W) content and binder phase systems, including W-Ni-Fe and W-Ni-Cu. Different grades vary in density, mechanical properties, machinability, and magnetic characteristics, making them suitable for different radiation protection applications. CTIA provides 90W, 92.5W, 95W, and 97W grades according to requirements for shielding efficiency, structural dimensions, mechanical properties, and operating environment.
1.Common Grades of Tungsten Alloy Radiation Shield
(1) 90WNiFe / 92.5WNiFe
① Density: 16.8–17.7 g/cm³
② Features: Offer a good balance of strength, toughness, and machinability, with tensile strength reaching 700–900 MPa and elongation of approximately 15%–25%. Compared with higher-tungsten grades, they provide better machining adaptability and structural reliability for complex structures and applications with higher mechanical requirements.
③ Applications: Source containers for industrial non-destructive testing equipment, radioactive source storage containers, nuclear medicine shielding components, radiation inspection equipment shielding parts, protective structures for industrial measuring instruments, and large or irregularly shaped tungsten alloy shielding components.
(2) 95WNiFe / 97WNiFe
① Density: 18.0–18.5 g/cm³
② Features: Have higher tungsten content and density, providing greater shielding capability per unit volume and allowing smaller shielding structures while meeting radiation protection requirements. They also offer good strength and dimensional stability for space-constrained and high-performance shielding components.
③ Applications: Medical linear accelerator collimators, Multileaf Collimator (MLC) leaves, radioactive source protective sleeves, industrial CT inspection equipment shielding parts, precision radiation inspection equipment components, and compact high-density shielding structures.
(3) 90WNiCu / 95WNiCu
① Density: 16.8–18.2 g/cm³
② Features: Use copper (Cu) as binder phase, avoiding magnetic effects of iron (Fe). They offer low magnetic permeability, good machinability, corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability for applications requiring magnetic compatibility and structural precision.
③ Applications: Shielding components around Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment, shielding parts for magnetically sensitive instruments, protective sleeves for geological logging instruments, protective structures for precision physics laboratory equipment, and radiation shielding components in low-magnetic-interference environments.

2. How to Select Tungsten Alloy Radiation Shield Grades?
(1) Selection Based on Installation Space: For space-constrained equipment demanding minimum shield wall thickness, 95WNiFe or 97WNiFe should be prioritized. For standard protective assemblies, 90WNiFe or 92.5WNiFe offers optimal structural economy.
(2) Selection Based on Magnetic Field Standards: Standard radiation protection applications rely on W-Ni-Fe series alloys. When operating within magnetic-sensitive apparatus or low-magnetic-interference environments, W-Ni-Cu non-magnetic alloys should be selected.
(3) Selection Based on Machining Complexity: For intricate shapes, thin-walled structures, or high-precision components, material grades offering superior workability should be selected to ensure dimensional accuracy and manufacturing yield.
